Built-Up Roof (BUR)

A built-up roof is made with several layers of materials which are held together by an adhesive. Also known as a tar and gravel roof, the modern version became popular in the 1920s and 1950s with both organic and inorganic felts gaining prominence. Earlier, coal tar was used for waterproofing which is now replaced by asphalt bitumen. The BUR is quite popular for new and existing roofs across Ontario.

Application Method of Built-Up Roofing

Built-up roofing is used for commercial flat roofs as well as for residential buildings worldwide. Several alternate layers of felt materials bound with bitumen are used to create the desired number of piles for the structure. Bitumen acts as an adhesive and helps to hold everything together. Then, gravel, smooth asphalt, or other materials are embedded into the top layer. A surface coating can also be applied to reduce the effects of harmful UV rays.

Benefits of Built-Up Roof

Listed below are the benefits of using the BUR system for a building:

  • Assured Performance
It has been used for a long time and is still preferred over other types of systems, thus proving its reliability and trustworthiness.
  • Durability & High Tensile Strength
Due to the layered structure, it can handle stress and does not get easily damaged under pressure. It is also more resistant to abrasion.
  • Weather Resistant
It can be modified and made available as a part of wind, fire, and hail roofing system, making it suitable for all weather conditions.
  • Low Maintenance
Due to its durability, the BUR system does not require high maintenance. Regular inspections to examine the components are enough.
  • Cost Effective
Although the initial cost of installing it may be high, built-up roofing proves to be economical in the long run because of lower maintenance and reliable waterproofing.
  • Several Finishing Options
BURs open a variety of possibilities for surfacing such as gravel finish and smooth, coloured finish. Most people prefer the light shades due to their energy-saving ability.
